The clients had already renovated this two-storey apartment on one of Haarlem's most beautiful streets with great care and eye for detail. Only the guest bathroom was still waiting its turn.

We took our inspiration from the very first bathrooms in traditional homes: rooms with wooden floors and plastered walls, anything but the modern tiled bathroom. The walls were treated with Kurasanit in a warm, chalky tone, the herringbone floor was drawn through from the hallway, and the room kept its old proportions: the high ceiling, the panelled door, the tall window with its soft daylight.

At the centre stands the custom vanity: a fluted oak cabinet on a slender brass base, finished with a stone top and softly rounded corners. Above it, an arched brass mirror with its own glass shelf, flanked by alabaster lights with the kind of glow that makes everyone look their most natural best. The shower stays quiet: brass fittings against plaster, a curtain instead of glass, like in any other room of the house.

In the powder room the same language returns, translated to its small scale: a curved, bullnosed stone top carrying a custom brass sink that will only grow more beautiful with use. A soft, calming space… with details left to be discovered.
