Residential project, Amsterdam
 

The clients purchased a 1930s ground-floor home with a lovely garden in Amsterdam, but with a layout that was less fitting to their needs: small rooms, disconnected from each other, and the drafty single-glazed comfort of its era.

We reworked the layout from the ground up and added an extension with a large skylight and harmonica doors that pull the garden into the house. The living space became one open plan, connecting kitchen, dining and sitting area. What used to be the living room became the bedroom, keeping the stained glass, with a walk-in closet leading through sliding doors to the bathroom: every square metre earning its place. The home was also made fully energy efficient: off gas entirely, with a heat pump and a state-of-the-art ventilation system.

The wish in terms of style: a home that feels modern yet traditional, with classical and elegant elements. The palette is light and neutral, with blue as the connecting thread. In the kitchen it appears as soft light blue cabinetry, its molding running uninterrupted across fronts and drawers, no handles to break the lines. At its centre stands the island, inspired by the bars of old pubs, designed as a piece of furniture: dark wood, softly rounded, with finely detailed legs.

In the powder room the blue deepens: dark blue wainscoting, wallpaper of oak leaves and birds above it, a cloud-covered ceiling and a marble mosaic floor. A room that surprises every guest, with its whimsical atmosphere and its unusually generous size.
